On Wednesday, Boeing stated that it was hit by a cyberattack. Boeing executives identified the malware as the WannaCry virus that hit thousands of computers in over 70 countries last year.
New York Times reported that an internal memo from Mike VanderWel, Boeing’s chief engineer, said it was an “All hands on deck” situation and stated that the attack was “metastasizing.” He seemed to be worried that it would spread to their production systems and airline software.
Boeing seemed to play down the cyberattack in a statement given on Wednesday evening.
“A number of articles on a malware disruption are overstated and inaccurate,” Boeing’s statement said. “Our cybersecurity operations center detected a limited intrusion of malware that affected a small number of systems. Remediations were applied and this is not a production or delivery issue.”
